Mouflon Sheep
At Paloma Blanca Ranch we raise European Mouflon Sheep for sale to breeders and to other ranches. We also have hunting throughout the year for gun and bow hunters. Interested buyers or hunters are welcome to make arrangements to come by to look at our Mouflons before deciding to purchase.
Our Mouflons are kept on the range in as natural condition as possible. This keeps the animals wild and self sufficient. We do not pamper the Mouflon or pen raise, or bottle feed them. Our animals are not raised as pets. Our animals are strong and wily and can fend for themselves.

They have been raised facing the elements, weather and varmints…….and are all the stronger for it. We do feed 20% protein in the winters or exceptionally dry summers on a limited basis and we feed minerals as free choice year round. Most of the year we have plentiful food for the Mouflon on the range. We think that our way of raising is superior and makes for a naturally strong, beautiful, magnificent animal.
We capture our Mouflons in a pen and attract them with feed. A remote controlled gate is closed when the animals are ready for trapping. They are initially sorted in the pen and are then herded into a trailer where final sorting, if necessary, can be done. Stress to the animals is kept to a low level. We do not use nets or tranquilizers which are more apt to cause overstressing and harm to the animals.
Background:
The Mouflon is thought to be the ancestor of all modern sheep breeds. Mouflon Sheep are reddish brown with white underparts and muzzle and black patches on the throat, chest and shoulders. Adult males (rams) have a white saddle-shaped area on the back, which is most predominant during the breeding season. Rams have large, curled horns and females normally have no horns. Pure Mouflon rams have horns that curl and as you look at their face the horns make a heart shape. Their horns can curl outward but the tips of the horns should not extend past the broad, upper part of the horn. Pure Mouflons should not have tails that are longer than 3-4”.
| Mouflons are indigenous to mountains, rocky country and hillside regions. They do very well in the Texas Hill Country and are normally self sufficient when raised on ranch lands. They eat grass, herbs, twigs, heather acorns lichens, moss, flowers and leaves (oak and shinoak, particularly). Supplemental feeding of our Mouflons occurs only in winter or summers with long periods of drought. Mouflons can live long 10-12 years. |

Females and young live in herds led by an old ewe. Mouflons are active early and late in the day and like to rest during most of the day. Normally in October the rams begin their rutting activities and seek out receptive females. This is the time when most of the head butting takes place but serious physical damage hardly ever occurs. Males will rut until all the females are bred, usually sometime in December. Most lambs are born in March, about 5 months after inception. Most births are single but multiple births do occur but are uncommon. After the rut males break off from the herds and remain solitary until they form bands in late summer as a prelude to the rut.
Mouflons are not noted for their high jumping ability but they can jump a 4 ˝ foot fence if threatened or if something on the other side strikes their fancy. Normally a strand of barbed wire at the top of the fence will be enough to stop their attempts. Mouflon are superior long distance jumpers. They enjoy running and jumping over cactus, creek beds and other obstacles. It’s a delight to watch them run and jump as they are very strong and graceful.
